Facebook to Feature “Profile Videos”

They call it “Profile Video”, but it’s more like a profile GIF… but technically speaking, it isn’t a GIF at all.

Now that we’ve got you properly confused, what we’re really trying to describe is Facebook’s new feature that lets users use a looping 7-second video clip (taken within the Facebook app) as their profile image. So it’s really like a GIF made out of a 7-second video clip instead of several photos.

Well, before you go rushing into creating that fab 7-second clip you’d like to turn into your profile video, take note that for now, this perk will only be available to a number of iPhone gadgets in the UK and California.

Furthering their support for videos and animated images, Facebook said : “”On News Feed and profiles, we’re seeing people create and view more videos than ever before. Today we’re starting to test the next step in an obvious evolution of profiles: profile videos. Soon, you’ll be able to film a short, looping video clip that will play for anyone who visits your profile. Profile videos will let show a part of yourself you couldn’t before, and add a new dimension to your profile.”

This is certainly a move in the right direction –if not a bit late – what with the uber popularity of personalised GIFs and memes out there.

This Sunday’s Supermoon

It’s been on the news, on social media, and some folks in your local pub may have been talking about it as well. You may have even taken out your gadgets and tried (unsuccessfully) to capture the beauty of the red-colored gargantuan moon.

Well, before we head on to the semi-geeky discourse on last Sunday’s supermoon, here is a gorgeous picture of the partially eclipsed supermoon as it occurred over Las Vegas in the US, courtesy of BBC.

Going back to our semi-geeky discourse, a supermoon occurs when the Earth’s natural satellite is at perigee- that point when the moon is closest to Earth during orbit. The supermoon is not actually the rarest of things, but what really makes September 27, 2015 special is that the supermoon coincides with the full moon and a lunar eclipse.

The result? The  breath-taking sight of a full moon, seen 14% larger than its usual size, with a tint of red. To the romantics out there: don’t you think it is time to take out your quill and create your personal love sonnet?

Star Wars VII Update: Find Out Who’s Coming Back!

The charm of Star Wars is only made more convincing by the fact that it has captured the awe of generation after generation since the Star Wars: A New Hope was released in the early 80s. Capturing the imagination of both the young and old, it would be no surprise to find someone who has binge-watched all Star Wars movies more than five times; or to find a fan who has had no other wallpaper in his gadget homepage except for Star Wars movie posters; or someone who can spew out a movie quote simply from memory.

For those who have grown up to all six movies, it would be exciting to know who of the beloved Star Wars characters will be making an appearance in the upcoming movie – Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If you’re one of these fans, check out our list and find out whether your personal favourites will be making a comeback in Star Wars Episode VII.

Han Solo and Chewbacca

Once you’ve seen the early Star Wars flick, you can never forget the swash-buckling charm of Harrison Ford as Han Solo, the pilot of Millenium Falcon… that’s why it’s such a thrill to see him back, with his trusty Wookie co-pilot Chewie (played by Peter Mayhew), of course.

Luke Skywalker

Played by Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker was the key figure in the first Star Wars trilogy. It would be interesting to finally find out how he figures into the new story which takes place three decades after Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.

Leia Organa

More than being Luke Skywalker’s twin and Han Solo’s wife, Princess Leia is more popularly known for her bun head and her other alluring qualities.

Star Wars VII Update: Meet the Heroes

You’ve gotten a glimpse of the bad guys of Star Wars Episode VII in the previous chapter; it’s only fitting that you get to know the heroes this time around.

The heroes: (L-R) Poe Dameron, Rey, and Finn Photo from Pinterest

Nope. There’s nothing wrong with your eyes, your gadget screen is also working properly… you’re seeing it how it is: Finn is a male human, he’s wearing a Stormtrooper uniform (minus the helmet, obviously), but he’s no baddie. In fact, reports have it that this guy is one of the lead characters of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But with all the secrecy surrounding this character, feel free to make up your own personal back-story to Finn.

If you’ve seen the fairly popular science fiction- street gang-comedy flick, Attack the Block, this guy – John Boyega – would be a familiar face. Otherwise, the makers of Star Wars Episode VII have succeeded in casting a ‘relatively unknown celebrity’.

Her fashion sense would tell you she’s from Tatooine, but it has been revealed that she’s not. She’s from a different desert planet called Jakku… and her dibs? The shell of what used to be an Imperial AT-AT – those huge walking mechanical baddies from The Empire Strikes Back.

Another ‘relatively unknown celebrity’, 23-year-old Daisy Ridley has certainly shot her way to the stars with her major role in this flick – pun intended!

Poe Dameron

Poe Dameron is the first lead character to come with a first and last name… taking away any room for suspicions on how he may or may not be related to the characters of the earlier Star Wars episodes. One look at the signature orange uniform and the Star Wars loyalists would know, Poe Dameron is a Rebel Alliance pilot.

Guatemalan Oscar Isaac is not a new name in Hollywood. He adds Star Wars: The Force Awakens to his impressive list of movies which include Inside Llewyn Davis – for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination – and the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.

Star Wars VII Update: Meet the Baddies

The long-awaited seventh instalment to the Star Wars series is set to be released on December this year. With the upcoming film, the epic science fiction-adventure series is looking to enjoy the love of younger fans, adding to the other older generations that have grown up with the film.

Even years before filming, the buzz on this flick could barely be contained: some were irked by the fact that Disney has taken hold of the film franchise; some got exhilarated upon learning that their personal favourite characters from the original film are joining the cast… the others? Well, just plain old excited!

Let’s work on that excitement, shall we? We’ll get you glued on to your gadget screens with these updates, trivia, and what-not – all related to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Today’s update: meet the villains. (Photos from EW)

General Hux

General Hux

Commander of the Starkiller Base, the gruff appearance and stately garb worn by General Hux is reminiscent of Imperial army uniform. Those who have seen Domhnall Gleeson’s sweet and charming character in About Time might get pleasantly surprised with this more masculine change.

Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren

Played by Adam Driver, Kylo Ren is a lightsaber-wielding badass. Enough said. In case you’re wondering that’s Adam from HBO’s Girls inside that mask.

Captain Phasma

Captain Phasma

If you think Gwendoline Christie is cool as Brienne of Tarth in HBO’s Game of Thrones… what do you think of her as a First Order Captain named Phasma?

Keep visiting us here for great deals, cool stuff, and of course, more updates on Star Wars VII.

This Year’s Perseid Meteor Shower

The Perseid Meteor shower happens in August every year; it is one of the most popular yearly light show, watched by admirers from both the North and the South hemispheres.

The Perseids are actually chunks off the Swift-Tuttle Comet, which disintegrates into small pieces a long time ago. Each August, the Earth passes through a cloud of the comet’s debris and brings forth this amazing meteor shower that’s a personal favourite of sky watchers all over the world. The small particles actually impact the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of approximately 60km/s (37 miles/s), but we don’t feel the impact at all since the particles are all made up of ice and dust; they come in dimensions which range from the size of a grain of sand to around as big as a pea. Do you want to know the more amazing part? It’s these small hits of ice and dust which cause the spectacular light show!

The best time to view this meteor shower is from about 23:00 local time on 12 August until the morning of 13 August… given, of course, the presence of a clear and cloudless sky. So what are you waiting for? Grab your favourite star-gazing gadget and head out for a fantastic light show tonight. Remember, this only comes once every year!

G is for Google, the Other Letters are for something Else…

Google has made headway in a broad range of business and technology endeavours, now the company is going to cover everything from A to Z – literally.

The technology giant announced early this week that it has restructured and formed a new holding company called Alphabet.

While the largest chunk of Alphabet will, of course cover the Google search engine as the core web advertising business; but in addition to that, the restructuring will now clearly identify the specific companies that Google has put up to invest in different activities and gadgets such as autonomous cars, smart household devices, delivery balloons, as well as cutting edge medical research. This move is in support of their more adventurous business ventures; in the Alphabet website, Larry Page founder wrote: “We did a lot of things that seemed crazy at the time. Many of those crazy things now have over a billion users, like Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome, and Android. And we haven’t stopped there. We are still trying to do things other people think are crazy but we are super excited about.”

The 7 percent to 708USD rise in after-hours trading for Google shares appears to be a vote of confidence from those with a personal stake in the business – the investors. Most of these investors are happy about the clarity this arrangement will now bring better financial disclosure for Google and all its subsidiaries.

For Coffee Addicts: Vietnam’s Ca Phe

Vietnamese coffee, locally known as Ca Phe, holds something in store for all types of coffee drinkers out there.

Ca phe nong will surely satisfy those who take their coffee warm, short, highly viscous, and black as night. It is completely unpretentious and bold, ready to give anyone’s day a kick-start. For an authentic taste of Vietnamese Ca phe, try a brew using a mix of Arabica, Robusta, and Excelsa rough grounds – this blend would definitely be up to the exacting standards of coffee connoisseurs out there.

Ca phe nong is the foundation of all Vietnamese coffee treats; think of it as their version of espresso. Ever wonder how they come up with an espresso without the espresso machine? Meet the ca phe phin: a small metal filter designed to give you a full-flavored cup of ca phe with only the power of hot water and gravity at its disposal.

With Ca phe nong as the base, coffee drinkers tending to sweet cravings can turn to ca phe sua. Ca phe sua literally translates to coffee with milk… this particular mix catches the fancy of sugar lovers because ca phe sua makes use of sweet condensed milk as the creamer and sweetener.
